David MacCarfrae owner of David Cakes from Liverpool England, has over 40 years of business experience in manufacturing and retail. A qualified baker and international teacher, he has won UK national training awards and multi -TV business awards, as well as making cakes for The British Royal Family.
David first started cake decorating at home at the age of 6 where he helped his Mum in the kitchen during the weekly family bake-offs.
Following his dreams through determination and hard work rewarded him with a glittering cake decorating career, running his own retail cake shop business ‘David Cakes of Distinction’ in Crosby, Liverpool for 30 years, resulting in both UK and international recognition and global success.
Celebrating with City and Guilds ‘Distinctions’ in cake decorating and food technology achieved through two years of intensive college training from 1980-1981 (including spending time working in corporate bakery industry) David teaches quick and easy low cost commercial free-hand cake decorating life-skill techniques as well as more complex.
During his career, David from Liverpool England has attended many prestigious international VIP corporate sponsored events taking place around the world where, as international guest of honour he was invited to shared his knowledge of free-hand cake decorating, while demonstrating centuries old cake art piping techniques to captivated audiences, TV and media.
In 2011 he was invited by a New York casting agency to star as a judge on CAKE WALK the 13 part international cake decorating reality TV series produced in Canada, which after syndication in 13 countries around the world is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video UK | USA | Australia | Canada.
David is also a website designer and also runs his own in-house video production company in association with Liverpool Tech Group and Giant communications. Together they film and produce David Cakes Online International Cake Decorating Club videos, featured on David Cakes YouTube, Instagram, Facebook and TikTok.
Specialising in teaching the art of centuries old free-hand cake decorating techniques, David teaches 1-1 private and group tuition online and in-person at The Royal Hotel in Liverpool England. At the club house, he is joined by Hayley and Edward, creating together, as they showcase both baking and cake decorating from a home-baking persepective, to a commercial working bakery enviroment, embracing quick, easy commercial ways to bake and decorate with a creative twist.
Hayley owner of ‘Hayley Bops Cakes‘ in Liverpool England has attained success through her rising popularity on Tik Tok and gained the attention from UK national television. In 2024 Hayley was invited to compete on ‘The Great British Bake-Off: Professionals’ reality TV series, which gave her greater understanding of creating under pressure as well as working together, as team. In 2025 Hayley was invited to host and demonstrate her art at five national ‘Foodies Festivals’ and is in great demand as a live host and demonstrator at national UK cake / baking shows, trade fairs and food expos.
Hayley started her baking journey at the age of 7, watching her Grandma bake her “famous” family Tea-loaf.
She remembers her Nan sharing recipes with her Mum, who continued the family tradition of baking from scratch and ultimately, passed those home-baking values on to Hayley.
Hayley baked her first cake for her 4 year old daughter’s birthday, which, as she recalls, “turned out like a pancake!”. From that moment, Hayley wanted to redeem herself and through practice and determination, she finally, took pride in presenting her daughter with a perfectly baked birthday cake – Young Hayley was now ‘on her way’, baking cakes at every opportunity for family and friends.
At the start of 2019, Hayley decided to finish her part-time job and focus on evolving her home-baking into a business dream. Soon after the global pandemic began, she put her energy into voluntarily supporting the UK National Heath Service (NHS), baking bread and sewing masks and scrubs, which were donated to local hospitals.
Attending domestic science classes during her early school days, made her become fascinated with the science of baking, with a yearning to learn about the ‘whys and hows”, while pushing her creative boundaries.
Hayley has been given the opportunity to work part-time at a large local bakery store and joins David and Ed, presenting while sharing her baking and decorating experiences from both the large store bakery, as well as her own home-business, while offering tips, advice and her famous ‘Hayley’s Hacks’ decorating features at the club house.
Edward from Liverpool England joined David Cakes in 1994, initially as a van driver, delivering wedding and celebration cakes to clients and venues.
As the months went by, Ed started to practice free-hand piping and flower making every day, which David encouraged.
Ed soon started to evolve and expand his creative ideas, designing creations for David Cakes store front, decorating with the free-hand techniques that David had shared with him, but creating with his own unique style, which added fresh ideas to the wedding and celebration product range.
Ed pursued his new found passion for cake decorating and became a key member of David Cakes retail cake shop creative team, designing and decorating cakes, as well as offering training to new staff, as well as managing day-to-day production and running of the store-front, dealing with clients and sales.
He accompanied David as his teaching assistant for 10 years of travelling around the world, demonstrating his free-hand cake decorating skills at many international cake decorating seminars, cake shows and bakery expos.
Ed continues to assist and support David, offering his creative input, acting as a camera man and sound engineer at the club house, and during David’s 1-1 online custom masterclasses and in-person masterclass courses at The Royal Hotel in Liverpool.
As part of the club house presenting team, Ed continues to enjoy his online studio technican role, as well as creatively interacting with David and Hayley, with design ideas while sharing tips and advice.
